If you’re a ballet enthusiast or someone who just loves the idea of experiencing the elegance of ballet in a breathtaking setting, the Pas de Deux in Paradise event at qualia is a must-visit. Here’s a glimpse into our enchanting journey at this extraordinary event.
Imagine an intimate ballet performance, gourmet dining, and the serene beauty of the Whitsundays all in one place. This is what you can expect at qualia’s Pas de Deux in Paradise. We embarked on this journey filled with excitement and anticipation, ready to immerse ourselves in a world of art, culture, and natural beauty.
Opening Cocktail Evening

Our adventure began with an opening cocktail evening. Although we were running late from our spa appointment, we detoured to Pebble Beach instead of the Long Pavilion. This detour turned into a delightful surprise as we spotted a wallaby on the beach. Eventually, we made our way to the Long Pavilion, where we were introduced to the event schedule for the next few days and mingled with other attendees.
The gathering included an impressive lineup of guests, such as sponsors, ballet ambassadors, board members of the Australian Ballet, and notable figures like the director, choreographer, and artists. The evening was filled with lively conversations and the occasional whimsical moment, like ants circling a light.
Australian Ballet Barre Class Viewing

We had a quick breakfast on the third morning, as we had to rush to catch the barre class viewing. The express breakfast was accompanied by takeaway coffees, ensuring we were fueled and ready for the day’s activities.
The Australian Ballet Barre Class Viewing was hosted by Katriona Rowe and David Hallberg, with Andrew someone on the keyboard. The class started on the barre and then moved to the center, providing an insightful glimpse into the rigorous training and discipline of the ballet dancers.
Masterclass with David Hallberg and Christopher Wheeldon

In the Long Pavilion, a masterclass with David Hallberg and Christopher Wheeldon featured a three-chair setup. They spoke about their roles and experiences. David discussed the importance of stepping back to empower others, while Chris shared his thoughts on how dancers inspire his choreography, even if he finds the term “muse” a bit cringeworthy.
Ballet Class
The ballet class, led by Jason and Andrew, took place in the Long Pavilion. Due to the small space and the presence of other guests, we didn’t film this session but found it to be an intimate and educational experience.
Pas de Deux in Paradise Performance
The highlight of the event was the Pas de Deux in Paradise performance at Pebble Beach. Despite weeks of rain, we were fortunate to enjoy a break in the weather. Greeted with champagne, we were checked in by someone with an iPad. This year, the tables were laid out around the pool rather than on the lawn in front of the stage, creating a more intimate setting.
Accompanied by a violin and cello, the most gorgeous floral arrangements adorned the venue. At Table 12, we found handwritten name cards, a food menu, and an overview of the night’s performances.
Post-Performance Panel Discussion
After the performance, we participated in a panel discussion where we could ask the ballet artists questions. We learned about how they take care of their bodies, avoiding extreme sports and other risky activities to maintain their physical well-being.
Meeting the Ballet Artists
The event concluded with a chance to meet the ballet artists, adding a personal touch to the already extraordinary experience.
Conclusion
Our time at qualia for the Pas de Deux in Paradise was nothing short of magical. From the elegant performances and insightful classes to the exquisite dining and stunning scenery, every moment was a testament to the beauty of ballet and the luxurious charm of qualia. Whether you’re a ballet aficionado or someone looking to explore this graceful art form, this event is an experience you won’t want to miss.
